As a hobby I collect and sell excellent vintage XL & XXL sweaters. I don't collect Ralph Lauren Polo which I consider to be over priced junk, and Hilfiger is just the same overpriced junk. LLBean has gone way downhill in the past twenty years so I only buy their vintage identifiable 'preppy' sweaters. Top of my excellence list is DALE OF NORWAY - Coogi is an excellent Australian wool product but have a slight negative 'hip hop' attachment to them. I am very opinionated, but do have a great collection of first class sweaters. I am not looking or expecting to make any profit from this hobby except for the experience, and a large personal collection of sweaters to choose from....and it gives me something to do in the summer evenings when woolen ski sweaters may be purchased at their least expensive and sell them at a higher price in the winter evenings when they are in demand...of course I use eBay. I am currently educating myself on women's 501 Levi real vintage jeans such as the number on the back of the top button-and the V stitch.
However, there is so much scam and rip-off involved in Levi 501 jeans that I have decided to just to keep my eye open at local flea markets for some good items...eBay is full of overpriced 501 junk.

After being ripped off a couple of times buying 501 Levi vintage jeans on eBay, I decided to educate myself on how to identify the real vintage 501 jeans

After being ripped off a couple of times buying 501 Levi vintage jeans on eBay, I decided to educate myself on how to identify the real vintage 501 jeans
One of the clues to dating real vintage Levi 501 jeans is the V shape stitch below the inside rivet of the top button where the stitching stops at the rivet, and the rivet has one, two, or three numbers stamped on it - as shown in above photo. The stitching has to stop at the rivet center and the single numbers are found on the older 501 Levi jeans.
Very early 501's had a rivet at the bottom of the fly area, until an executive stood too close to a barbecue fire for half an hour - the rivet over heated and burned his private parts, and so the lower rivet was discarded...or, so the story goes:-)
Another 501 clue is the use of Selvedge denim meaning ''self edge" which was produced on the old looms used up until the 1950's. It can be seen on jeans that have been turned up into a cuff...it is the white edges on the seam with red thread which the color red enabled workers to identify the cloth rolls. Below: The Levi RED TAG with the large E is pre 1971.
